            Shevchenko University or official name Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (Київський національний університ имені Тараса Шевченка in Ukrainian), commonly known as Kyiv National University KHU in Ukraine (Київський національний універcитет-КНУ in Ukrainian), is located in Kyiv, capital of Ukraine. KNU ranks among the top 550 universities in the world. It is one of the oldest universities in Ukraine, and was one of the top ten famous universities in Europe. It consists of 15 academic departments and five schools. Founded by Russian Tsar Nicholas I in 1789, it was originally named the Imperial University of Saint Vladimir of Kyiv, and has been renamed several times since then. Taras Shevchenko National University, together with Moscow State University and Leningrad State University, ranked among the top three universities during the Soviet period. It was recognized as the best university in Ukraine in many rankings. Many celebrities or outstanding figures in Ukraine are from this university.
